Ominous Black Clouds in a Childs Dream Posted July 28, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"They say dreams are the windows of the soul; take a peek and you can see teh inner workings, the nuts and bolts."   - Henry Bronel
Dear Lauri,
My 5 year old dreamed that he was on the deck with a friend and they noticed a horrible black cloud and they knew it meant danger. They had to jump on the CONCREEP and then he woke up, and came and got in the bed with me. – Melissa 38, Minneapolis, MN
Lauri: Awe! You gotta love kid language, huh?  Did your son get in trouble the day before the dream? I ask because the dark, ominous cloud may represent – to him – a foreboding authority figure because the cloud, like a parent, it is above him. And if he did get in said trouble, is it because he was doing something that was deemed dangerous?
Melissa replies: He had to get out of the pool yesterday because he couldn’t follow pool rules. He had to watch his brother continue to swim without him! Maybe I did have an impact?
Lauri: You did, you big black cloud of parental authority! And that is why he had to get on the concrete in the dream, because in real life he had to get out of the pool and stay on the concrete. Just goes to show you that when you think your kids aren’t listening, what you say does seep through.
FASCINATING DREAM FACT: Ever wonder why your eyes move back and forth under your lids during REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement)? Because you're watching what's going on in your dream!

Cleaning Out Dragonflies in a Dream Posted July 21, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"Being awake is highly overrated"   - Maynard G. Krebbs

Dear Lauri,
I had a dream this afternoon during a nap that I was cleaning my apartment. When I was vacuuming, I saw 3 dragonflies flying around. I tried to shoo them out the window but they just wouldn't go. I finally managed to get one of them out, but the other 2 stayed inside.   – Jen 22, Madison, WI
Lauri: Cleaning in a dream means there is some cleansing taking place in waking life. What sort of cleansing are you going through right now?  Trying to clean up a behavior or attitude?  Cleanse yourself of frustration or negativity? Whatever it is, it is most likely something that you feel seems to “drag on” and on, hence the dragon flies.  There were three of them so there must be three issues.  Trying to get them out of your house means you want these issues out of your life or out of your way.  It seems you’ve had success with one so there are two more to go.
Jen replies:  As far as the "dragging on" portion, I'm in a summer class that just doesn't seem to end. My attitude towards school in general could use a good "cleaning" because I'm suffering from SEVERE senioritis, ha ha. Maybe once I start my core classes again, instead of this gen ed, I can shoo the "dragonflies" out, I can clean up my attitude towards school and buckle down and finish out my last two semesters.

FASCINATING DREAM FACT: The ancient Chinese believed the soul left the body to travel the world when dreaming and that if awakened before the dream was over the soul would not be able to return. Because of this, many Chinese today are not too keen about owning an alarm clock!

Dreaming You Don't Know How to Ride Posted July 14, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

Dear Lauri,
I’m riding a Harley down a street.  As I get to a hill that I’m about to ride down, I see a large group of bikers riding down the cross street below.  I get nervous and realize that I actually don’t know how to ride a motorcycle.  I’m scared that I’ll mess up if I end up riding with the group.  Then the Harley turns into a bike.  I’m pedaling down the hill until I realize I don’t know how to ride a bike either. I’m actually surprised that I’ve been keeping my balance for that long.  Now that I’ve thought about it, I can’t figure out how to get my balance so I end up "walking" the bike and trying to remember where I was headed. – Laurel 34, Las Vegas, NV
Lauri: Your dream reflects an increasing lack of confidence in yourself or in your own power.  It seems a direction your life was headed in once had great momentum but now is barely worth the ride.  Motorcycles and bikes are both single passenger vehicles. Anything you want or need to do solo? The bicycle may also be a message that you need to scale back for your own good and find the right balance for yourself before continuing on down a certain path.
Laurel replies:  I realize now that this dream is about my relationship path.  I’ve had a blow to my confidence that made me lose my motivation for dating.  My massage therapist came on to me during a session and it got physical.  However, once I realized he wasn’t wearing a condom, I stopped everything and never saw him again.  Unfortunately, I didn’t stop it fast enough because I developed signs of an STD within days of the incident.  I now feel dirty and scared to date anyone else.  It feels like I’m being punished for allowing it to happen at all. I’m used to feeling powerful in being able to attract people to me; now it scares me. I’m struggling to balance what happened to me with how to deal in the future.

Stuck on a Bike that Won't Move Posted July 8, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"(Dreams) afford unmistakable information about the analytical situation, the correct understanding of which is of the greatest therapeutic importance." -Carl G. Jung

Dear Lauri,
I dreamed I was a prostitute and this guy from work was trying to kill me so I jumped on a bike to try and get away but the bike wouldn't go anywhere. It wouldn't move, which made me mad for wasting time that I could have spent running.   – Nicole 30, West Jordan, UT
Lauri: Being a prostitute suggests you are selling yourself short in some way, you are not living up to or are not being respected for your value. When someone tries to kill you in a dream it means you are feeling pressure – either from yourself or from someone around you – to put an end to something in waking life. The guy from work may be a clue. Are you feeling undervalued at work? Maybe this is the part that needs to be killed off. The bicycle is your ability to have balance in your life, such as your ability to successfully balance work and your personal life. But since the bike isn’t moving in the dream, you must have an imbalance in your life that is holding you back, keeping you from moving towards a goal you have.
Nicole replies:  I am starting grad school tomorrow in hopes of changing careers because I hate my job! Yes, I now have to balance school and my job and I will be stuck like this until I graduate. I can’t wait to kill the job off.

Fascinating Sleep Fact:

According to scientists at Washington State University, when you feel sleepy parts of your brain are actually asleep.  Sleep creeps up on you as independent groups of brain cells become fatigued and go to sleep even while you are still awake. Eventually, enough go to sleep and you doze off.

A Wolf in Your Dream Posted June 30, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"…we may expect to find in dreams everything that has ever been of significance in the life of humanity." -Carl G. Jung

Dear Lauri,
In my dream I woke up in the woods in the middle of the night and sat up.   About 5 feet from me was a black wolf with red eyes, and it ran to me and just before it bit me, I woke up.   – Nicole 21
Lauri:  Is there someone around you that you would describe as greedy or ravenous or perhaps even predatory? Someone you feel may be out to get you or is involved with you for their own greedy needs? Or is there a part of you that you would describe this way that you fear may be starting to overpower you? The fact that you "woke up" in the dream means you have recently “woken up” to this issue.  The red eyes are a red flag you are sending yourself that this person does not see you in the way you wish they would.
Amber replies:  Yes...my mother!  My fiancé and I just moved in with her and her boy friend and his son, and she keeps trying to drain every penny out of us and it makes it hard to save money. We give her bill money and rent and food for our half and every month she raises it.  Then we run out of food and she asks for more money so she can buy beer and cigarettes and booze.  Basically, I’m a bank.

Fascinating Sleep Fact:

A recent study suggests that people who sleep more than 9 hours a day are more likely to develop Parkinson’s Disease.

Death in a dream Posted June 23, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it." -John Steinbeck

Dear Dream Zone,
I dreamt last night that my grandpa was dying. My grandma called me first to tell me to come to Vegas to see him. What does that mean?   - Amber 22, Lincoln, NE
Lauri:  Unless your grandfather is in poor health, I wouldn’t worry.  Death in dreams rarely means death but instead means change. Ask yourself if your relationship with your grandfather is changing.  Are you not staying in touch with him as much as you ought to?  If so, your dreaming mind is worried that your relationship is "dying off."  Also ask yourself if HE is going through any changes.  It might be that the grandfather you know and love is changing a little, acting or doing something that's different than what is normal for him.  This sort of thing often causes death dreams.
Amber replies:  Our relationship has been pretty non-exstent until he and my grandma came out for Thanksgiving. Ever since then we talk at least twice a week. I really regret the fact that we never got the chance to improve our relationship earlier on. I am very happy that we are in contact now.

Bug infested Dreams Posted June 16, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

Dear Lauri,
In the corner of a cardboard box was an enormous spider the size of my hand.  I tried to kill it with one of those liquidizing wands.  I tried about three times to kill the spider.  As hard as I tried the spider was not in the least hurt nor threatened.  It didn't run away it just stood its ground and never moved. – Greer 61, Surrey, England
Lauri: When bugs infest our dreams, it’s a good indication that something or someone is really bugging us in waking life.  Spiders in particular often are connected to deceit, a web of lies woven by someone around you.  It is significant that you associated the spider with the size of your hand.   This is the way your dream is trying to show you that this situation is absolutely something you can "handle."  The fact that you tried three times to kill the spider suggests that in waking life you attempted to put an end to this situation to no avail.  Who has stood their ground with you?  The cardboard box is important. A lot of times, when we dream of card board it is connected to money issues.  It could also be related to you needing "to move" on (as we use card board boxes to pack and move) from this person or situation.   It seems the message is change your tactic or move on, otherwise things will never change.
Greer replies:  I think you have just about got it right. I was in a job situation where a colleague was on my case, no matter what I did or said would budge him. One time he even shoulder butted me.  I am in the process of moving house, now that I have lost my job, I can’t afford to live at my present location in London.  You are quite right.  I know I have to alter my strategy and move on.

Surviving a Plane Crash in Your Dream Posted June 15, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"I had a dream the other night. I dreamed that Jimmy Carter came to me and asked why I wanted his job. I told him I didn't want his job. I want to be President." - President Ronald Reagan

Dear Dream Zone,
I used to have a recurring dream where I was on a turbulent flight and then there is a sudden nosedive and loss in altitude.  I hear other passengers screaming as I look through the windshield of the cockpit and watch the ground fast approaching. The plane crashes on its belly at times and other times does violent cartwheels down a runway.  I am ALWAYS very calm and I ALWAYS survive.  From time to time I help other passengers but for the most part I seem to wander through the wreckage as emergency crews arrive.  – Matt 34, Atlanta, GA
Lauri:  Plane crash dreams happen when we feel something in our life is "crashing down" around us.  Usually planes symbolize our career, but can also symbolize anything else in our life that we want to "take off' and soar to new heights,” such as a relationship, finances, self esteem, etc.  Can you think of anything that was in jeopardy of crashing in your life at the time of these dreams?  Anything that was a "bumpy journey" at the time? The good news is that you survive in the dream.  This was your inner mind's way of telling you that you would come out of this situation just fine, that you would survive!
Matt replies:  I had this dream after I left my job with FOX Sports Net in Jan of 2001 and had trouble finding work.  Then of course 9/11 happened and things got worse in terms of the job market. I did survive because I finally got a job with CNN. Makes sense. Thanks!

Children on a Spiral Staircase Posted June 2, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"Your dream state is as personal to you as your thumb prints, as personal to you as your DNA." - Leon Nacson

Dear Lauri,
In my dream I am sitting on a winding staircase when three children approach me.  A little boy shows me two golden coins and tells me that they are real.  The second child shows me her doll and the third child gives me a hug.  I look over and see that another girl is drowning in a cage, and just when I think she has drown the water releases and flows out through the bars.   – Kim 29, Richmond, VA
Lauri:  Spiral staircases symbolize progress and development.  Just like the tiniest DNA strand or the most enormous spiral galaxy, the spiral is the shape of expansion and development.  In what area of your life are you progressing and taking one "step" at a time?  The three children are standing in for different parts of your personality or different parts of your life that are underdeveloped, and need lots of attention in order to reach their full potential.  In the process of nurturing these parts of you, certain "gifts" are realized. The gold coins symbolize that you and your goals are "genuine" and valuable.  The doll is your ability to care and nurture.  And the hug is your dream telling you to love yourself for these wonderful gifts you possess!  The drowning girl is very interesting imagery!!  Drowning often indicates depression.  Depression can certainly make us feel caged in.  The release of the water in your dream indicates that the depression has been lifted and now you are free!
Kim replies:   Your interpretation of my dream is right on.  I have recently overcome a deep depression.  I do believe the children in my dream represent different parts of me that I now need to work on.  I am on my path moving upward, and I appreciate your insights. You’re awesome!

Dreaming of Change Posted May 27, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"There seems to be something in dream images that reminds us of language . . . we have the feeling they might mean something."  - Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Dear Lauri,
I keep dreaming that I am finding change everywhere on the floor.  And it’s not a little bit but a lot of change!  In my dreams this is how I make money to live.  Why am I always picking up change and not bills?   - Sabrina 31, Elizabeth Town, PA
Lauri:  These dreams are trying to tell you that you need to "make a change" somewhere in your life!  If you can find the pun or metaphor in your dream, then you have found the message!  What sort of change do you think it is that you need to make?  Most likely the change that needs to be made lies within your job or however you make income since this is how you made income in your dream.  Ask yourself how long you’ve been having this dream.  Whenever this dream started is when the change needed to be made.  Once you make the necessary changes in your life, the dream will stop because it has served its purpose and has no reason to come back.
Sabrina replies:  It makes sense! I have been wanting to get things together and open my own shop.  Maybe this is saying that I am ready for the change and to go ahead.  I am going to learn what I need to do to start my shop up now instead of being scared not too. Thank you!

A Nurturing Dream Posted May 20, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

"Dreams point the way to one’s whole way of being."  - Dr. Paul Lippmann

A couple nights ago I had a very long dream, but only remember one part - an old chocolate lab dog walked up to me and I started petting her. She laid down on her back so I could rub her belly. I noticed her nipples were big, like she had been nursing puppies. I thought that was strange since she looked so old. As I reached down to pet her, milk started flowing out all over!   - Angi 33, Tampa, FL

Lauri:  Well, let's start with the obvious... are YOU pregnant or wanting to become pregnant? If not, then this dog may represent and "old" relationship (either friendship or a romantic relationship) or even a project that you are feeling the need to nurture again.  All that milk is your abundance of nurturing energy that is more than ready to feed this relationship or project.  Even the fact that the dog presented her belly to you is important.  It is the way you are telling yourself to go ahead and “belly on up” to the bar, so to speak, and get to work!

Angi replies:  I’m definitely not pregnant nor am I wanting to be.  But we are looking at buying a house and are considering getting a fixer-upper. I was thinking it might be an old property that would have new life under my hands. Thank you so much! I’ve really been enjoying your books. They’ve really been helping me remember my dreams and think about what they mean.

Fascinating Dream Fact:

Did you know each dream you have throughout the night progresses in duration?  Your first dream will be about 3 minutes long.  The last dream you have before awakening can be 45 minutes long!

Bugs in a Dream Posted May 12, 2010 by Lauri Loewenberg

I was in a bathroom, sitting on the floor with my legs stretched out to measure them with a yardstick.  I notice a bug on the floor that seems small at first, then notice bigger wings, like a dragonfly.  It keeps changing, and now I want to get a closer look.  I think it looks like a small lizard with wings.  It suddenly jumps off the wall onto my neck.  I try to swat it off my neck, wondering if it is poisonous. - Kim 44, Cleveland, Ohio

Lauri:  Your dream takes place in the bathroom because there is a waking life frustration that you wish to “cleanse” yourself of.  Interesting that you are measuring legs.  Have you been wondering how you measure up against someone else?  Your legs are your ability to stand up for yourself as well as move forward toward your goals… or even move on from something you need to leave behind.  Have you been wondering if you’ve got what it takes to do any of the aforementioned? The little bug you see also indicates that something has been frustrating you, or “bugging” you.  It is something that – like the bug in your dream – is increasing in size.  It morphs into a lizard, a cold blooded, seemingly unemotional creature.  Is there anyone around you that you might describe this way?  It jumps on your neck for a reason.  Your neck/throat area is where your voice comes from.  Your dream is telling you to use your voice, speak up about what frustrates you; this is the only way to cleanse yourself of it.

Kim replies:  My work situation has become increasingly frustrating.  There are some people that are very negative and that has been "bugging me.”  I do feel that it is time for me to leave this behind, so I am wondering how I would measure up in trying to move forward to a new situation.  Your interpretation was very accurate.  You have opened up a whole new world to me.  I love tuning into my little movies that play nightly for help in my waking life!
