Ashwabauenon, Wi (WSAU) It won't get many style points but the Wausau American Legion baseball team won again at the AAA State Tournament Friday night, beating De Pere 18-17. Post 10 nearly squandered an 8 run lead twice in the game and De Pere had the tying run on third base in the bottom of the ninth when reliever Adam Kramer induced a ground out to end it.
Mitch Howe led the 25 hit Wausau attack with a 6-7 night. Mike Parman and Seth McMullen hit homers as the Bulldogs built the original 8 run lead. De Pere came roaring back with seven runs in the middle innings. Wausau again built an 8 run lead before a ninth inning pitching meltdown led to the De Pere comeback
With the win Wausau qualifies for Sunday's championship game no matter what happens in Saturdays game with Eau Claire. And, since Wisconsin is sending two teams on to national play this year, Post 10 will be playing in a national regional next week in either Mattoon, Illinois or Spokane , Washington.
It's the second consecutive year that Wausau has advanced to the State Championship Game.
In the AA State Tournament in Merrill, Rhinelander won their opener beating the host Merrilll squad 14-0. Marathon was eliminated from the A Tournament losing to Somerset 5-4 on Friday.
