UNDATED (WRN) There are efforts at the Capitol to find new ways to pay for transportation projects in Wisconsin.

For decades, the state has relied primarily on the gas tax and vehicle registration fees. But those sources of revenue have been declining, says Craig Thompson of the Transportation Development Association.

Thompson thinks legislators need to, and will look at reviving gas tax indexing to provide a steady stream of DOT revenue. That system automatically increases the gas tax each April to cover inflation. It was dumped a few years back under heavy political pressure about raising taxes without a vote by lawmakers.
