WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – A 76 year old Korean War vet will be getting his Wausau High School Diploma some 60 years after leaving for basic training.
Ted Ulrich was a senior at then Wausau High School when he dropped out and went to basic training in Milwaukee. Ulrich was a forward observer for the Marines during the Korean War, and saw three years of service in the theatre. He earned numerous medals and ribbons for his service, and was honorably discharged in 1955.
Wausau East principal Brad Peck says Mr. Ulrich has demonstrated all the skills, effort and requirements that the school district should look for in handing out a diploma, despite the fact that he never completed his senior year. Peck says he takes the idea of handing out a diploma very seriously, and that Mr. Ulrich's service speaks for itself.
Ted Ulrich will be included in the 2010 graduating class on June 1.
